What Low Carb Food Consists Of... And What It's Good For
The boon of low carb food
It seemed that as soon as food manufacturers realized that this whole low carb food thing wasn't going away anytime soon, they all decided to jump in and get a piece of the reduced carb craze. Pretty soon there was an enormous array of food labeled as this magic and wonderful low carb food in the supermarkets and online shops. At the same time, even restaurants added dishes to their menus that were low carb and even did the carb counting for you!
This has made a lot of money for these companies, and for the creators of these low carb diets, but it has not necessarily been the best for the dieter. This is what you have to keep in mind as you proceed.
You don't need a label to recognize a low carb food
We are undoubtedly a culture that wants everything yesterday and that is even apparent in dieters (maybe even more so!). And a great many food companies cater to this fact and create products that can be eaten immediately, precooked and packaged. With the advent of the low carb phenomenon they have even taken it a step further and counted all of the carbs for you. There are a few problems with this and our sometimes lazy mentality. First of all pre-prepared foods are full of things that does not do a body good like preservatives and a higher than average amount of salt.
Another problem is that there is no FDA approved definition of what makes a low carb food actually low carb, and if there is no definition, then in theory anything could be labeled as a low carb food. Also be aware of the artificial sweeteners that are used to sweeten things like low carb bars. Or, for that matter low carb shakes. Many of these contain sugar alcohols which are not okay for many diets. So don't be fooled into thinking this is a really simple setup.
What kind of low carb food is best for you
In the end, the best thing for you and your diet is to buy fresh foods and prepare most of your meals in your own home. Eating a steady diet of high-fat, high-sugar, packaged and prepared foods in never a good idea, no matter if they are diet. Nothing beats a diet of the freshest foods available (whether they are low carb foods or not) that are closest to the way that nature intended. And the odds are that your food will taste better than anything that was made by a machine. one thing we do know is how difficult and time consuming it can be to prepare things like bread, so you should purchase food with the low carb label like low carb bread!
