Avoiding Bad Carbs
Let's say you've decided to forego the whole low carb diet thing and just decide to cut out sugar and all things white. Don't dread it. There's a whole new world of foods out there just waiting for you to try. And you might not even know it until you try.
Alternatives to Bad Carbs
If you've heard of brown rice, whole wheat pasta and sweet potatoes, you may think you don't like them. Or probably won't. But don't assume just yet. Go to the grocery store and buy things you normally would, but forego the sugary stuff (including fruit juices and soda, unless they're sugar free). Avoiding sugary foods is the biggest step you can take towards avoiding bad carbs. Get lean cuts of meat, apples, grapes, oranges, baby carrots, and yes--a sweet potato. Now that you have all the healthy carbs in the house, give the bad carbs to the neighbors.
Now that you have your good carbs, what will you do with them? Cook them! Here is a sample dinner menu and recipes:
1 skinless, boneless chicken breast
1/2 of a baked sweet potato
Caribbean Chicken
1 skinless, boneless chicken breast
1 garlic clove, crushed
Juice of 1 lime (or 1/4 cup bottled lime juice)
Seasoned salt
1. Mix lime juice and garlic together. Add chicken and marinate for 30 minutes.
2. Sprinkle each side of chicken breast with seasoned salt and grill or cook in 1 tablespoon olive oil until done.
Baked Sweet Potato
1 sweet potato
1. Wrap sweet potato in foil and bake at 450 for an hour to an hour and 15 minutes.
2. When it's done, add butter and cinnamon.
And during the day, you can snack on fruit all day to keep yourself from getting hungry. Seriously, give it a try and you might find that avoiding bad carbs is tasty and kinda fun!
